Frequently Asked Questions

If the Question involves Paint
The Answer is Smoky Mountain Painting

Q: What is latex paint?
A: Paint that can be thinned and cleaned up with water; used as a base for emulsion
paints.

Q: What is an alkyd paint?
A: Synthetic resin paint that is an oil base paint.

Q: What is an acrylic paint?
A: Synthetic resin that is present in most latex paints. It helps interior paints in adhesion,
coverage and scrubability.

Q: Can you apply latex over oil base?
A: Generally, no. If the oil base is flat, it will adhere, but if the oil base has a sheen---no.

Q: Can you apply oil over latex?
A: Yes. Interior and exterior.

Q: Why will oil base white paint turn yellow?
A: Because the alkyd resins in oil-based paint cause the gradual yellowing of white and
off-white colors.

Q: What can be done to paint latex over oil base paint?
A: A barrier coat of oil base flat primer on interior or exterior surfaces should be applied.
Also, you can sand and "rough up" the surface. This will aid adhesion of the latex.

Q: Is there a paint that is guaranteed not to mildew?
A: No. Mildew is a living organism that can feed on all types of surfaces (except zinc and
metal). You can kill mildew by washing with a mixture of household bleach and water (1 qt.
bleach to 1 gallon water).

Q: Can you paint over mildew?
A: Yes, you can, but it's not advisable. Mildew will grow into the finish coat of paint.

Q: Which is better, latex or oil stain, for future exposure?
A: Latex will retain its color for longer than oil base stain.

Q:"Can you tell me why some estimates seem high while others seem so low?"
A:YES. Most of the cost of a paint job is in the labor. So the price is determined by the
amount of surface preparation, the attention to detail, and quality desired. We would be
happy to review, in detail, our calculations for your project so you can make a fair
comparison with other bids.

Q:"The last painter we hired would work for a few days, then would be gone for a
couple days; always starting and stopping. Will you stay on the job once you
begin?"
A:YES. We'll stay with the project and work until your painting is completed. Our goal is to
have the same crew work on your job from start to finish.

Q:"Do you have references?"
A:YES. We would be happy to provide with references of similar jobs completed in your
area.

Q:"Do you carry liability insurance?
A:YES. Our insurance includes a million dollar general liability policy through Nationwide
Insurance as well as workmans comp.
.
Q:"Do you use top quality paint?"
A:YES. We use premium quality products from all the major suppliers. However, the brand
of paint we use can be influenced by other factors including customer preference, the
nature of the project, and other bid specifications.

Q:"Do you have a warranty?"
A:YES. A five-year limited warranty on most work.

Q:"Will my job be completed by experienced painters?"
A:YES. Our painters have all received adequate training in the tasks that they are
assigned. Most of  our painters have a minimum of ten years of experience.

Q:"Can you help with other things besides painting, like drywall repairs or
carpentry?"
A:YES. We are able to complete wall and ceiling repairs, carpentry, roof repairs and trim
work.

Q:"Do you protect our furnishing and clean up after you are done?"
A:YES. Floors, furniture and areas that are not supposed to be painted will be protected.
On completion we will pick up and clean up to return your home to the condition that we
found it.

Q:"Can you tell me what I need to do in order to get ready for the painters?"
A:YES. The only items we ask the customer to move are the small knick- knack type items
and pictures. We come expecting to move furniture, window treatments and switch plates.
Upon completion of the painting we will place all items we moved back in their correct
location.

Q:"Will you come back and take care of any touch up issues after the job is
completed?"
A:YES. If there are any areas that need to be touched up we will be more than happy to
come back and touch up any affected areas.
